Tantrums, toilets and Thomas the Tank Engine

This was going to be a post all about getting through January and how I cope with it - booking holidays, reading a good book, curling up in front of some crappy but compulsive TV at night (a new series of '24' has just started, set in New York; in it, Jack Bauer carries an interesting leather man-bag, perhaps a nod to Manhattan metrosexuality?). But, to be honest, that was rather dull, so I thought I'd tell you about my day yesterday. It was not a vintage one in the Nappy Valley household...but it was a fairly typical Wednesday (the one day the boys do not go to preschool in the morning, so they need entertaining all day).......

Let me give you a quick rundown:

* Littleboy 2 had the mother all of tantrums, which hereafter shall be known as the Muffin Tantum. I will not go into all the boring details; suffice to say that it involved him being dragged kicking and screaming for 400 yards along the street in order to prevent him returning ALONE to a bakery, where he had happily eaten a brownie and eschewed a muffin ten minutes before...
* Prior to this his brother had coughed over all the free cookie samples in said bakery, without putting his hand over his mouth. The owner was very nice about it, but I suspect those samples will be going straight in the bin....
*A visit to a friend's house for a playdate resulted in us inadvertently causing her toilet to overflow and leak all over the bathroom floor, just as she was about to rush off to an activity with her three kids. Cue lots of frantic mopping and administration of paper towels. And this time it was not the boys, but me, who was the culprit.....oh the embarrassment.
*We were supposed to be meeting another friend straight afterwards but had to rush back to our house first as my socks were soaking wet from the Toilet Incident. The boys were also demanding drinks so I snatched them some water bottles for the car. Littleboy 1 then howled all the way to the next playdate that he had wanted orange juice. I ignored him and turned the radio up louder.
*The evening news was just bloody depressing. More devastation in Haiti, and the residents of Massachussetts have taken it upon themselves to elect a Republican into the late Edward Kennedy's vacant seat, thus scuppering Obama's healthcare reforms. (For those not in the US, this is as if Tony Benn were to die and be replaced in a by-election by a Tory).
*My children, who are obsessed with Thomas The Tank Engine, have labelled me 'Sir Topham Hatt' when they play their imaginary Thomas games. So, I am the Fat Controller, who looks permanently cross and tells everyone off? I guess at least he's in charge, which is more than I can say for myself sometimes....Littleboy 1, meanwhile, has decided he is 'Spencer', who as far as I can see is an obnoxious and arrogant engine (although he is 'very fast'). Great.

Getting through January? To be honest, at the moment it's more about getting through Wednesdays....

Oh the joys of small children. It's why I started working:-) At least it sounds as though you have plenty of playdates which is impressive given how little time you've been there.

I don't know what it is about this year but I've lost my blogging mojo. Maybe I should blog about that...I still haven't even done the meme you tagged me for. Bad me.

I wrote a "woe is me" January post the other day, with a joke at the end to lighten the mood. I kept just the joke. But then I like hearing that I'm not alone with the winter blues, so now I'm not sure if I shouldn't have said something.

Is this the Mr Bean household.....

HomeOfficeMum - we don't have that many playdates. But I always try to schedule them for Wednesdays because the thought of a whole day in the house with the boys and no entertainment is just too terrifying...

Regina - thanks, and I will do

Mwa - it's not all bad. It's just a bit 'meh'....

NB - yes, sometimes I do feel as if I'm living in some unfunny slapstick comedy world.....

American toilets. What is it with them? Toilet-blocking is frequent and annoying. It never used to happen in Scotland.

And I agree with HOM. Even ONE play date would be impressive!

Iota - you are absolutely right about American toilets/plumbing! They are awful. This is not the first time we have had an 'incident'. And our landlady told us we had to buy special thin toilet paper because blockages are such a problem.....

I just discovered your blog and have really enjoyed reading it. I've been living in London for almost 8 years but was born/bred on Long Island and enjoy reading your thoughts on living/raising kids there.

Also, I'm totally with you on the toilets - almost every time I visit my parents we have some sort of toilet/plumbing episode...the fact that many people have cesspools also doesn't help. The first time my husband's parents came to visit we had plumbing overload and the cesspool had to be pumped. My parents tried to do this sneakily while we were out with but the pumping company left some poo in the driveway, which didn't go unnoticed!

Oh, I so agree about US plumbing, it's awful. And the electricity goes out all the time...had to dry my hair in the barn the other morning with the hairdryer hooked up to a Honda generator...it's like living in the third world sometimes!

I feel your pain. We have similar Thursdays when I basically lose the will to live and by the time I run out the door to dance class I hate everybody and everything so much that I'm absolutely prepared to be tortured by the dance teacher and the sight of my sweaty aged body in the 'fat' mirror under fluorescent lighting just so I can listen to loud music WITHOUT KIDS. When I came home yesterday Husband was grimly cleaning his shoe with a q-tip because Two had crapped on the floor and Husband had stepped in it. He'd put the boy in the bath and left him there (hello? drowning toddler anyone?) and as a result Two had finished his poo in the bathwater. Mmmm. But Thursday is my NIGHT OFF so I went straight back out to the supermarket in my dance gear for some light entertainment. I wish you could come here for a playdate..

Bump2Basics - thanks! Stopped by your blog already and will follow with interest....and will be very interesting to hear your take on Long Island too.

Vinogirl - we've only had one power cut so far, but several plumbing disasters. And our shower doesn't drain properly, even after a visit from a drain unblocker...sigh.

Mothership - we'd love to come for a playdate in SoCal! And I promise not to block your loo. We experience poo in bath on a regular basis...(and, see above, the bath doesn't drain properly, so double yuck).

I'm very envious of you living in glamorous New York. But when I read about your children, they behave exactly the same way my do on Northcote Road! So maybe New York isn't that different after all.

Oh your description of your day sounds so familiar. And how odd - my 6 year old was always torn between being 'Gordon' or 'Spencer' - the 2 most obnoxious trains on Sodor. He simply wouldn't be persuauded otherwise.

And purrllleaase - don't talk to me about American plumbing! Although I thank my lucky stars that I haven't as yet blocked anyone's toilet at a playdate. It's bad enough when I inadvertently block my own!

All sounds remarkably familiar...

Just asked the boys who everyone is. Adam says he is Gordon because he is 4 which makes sense. I am also the Fat Controller because I am.. wait for it... fat. I'm not best pleased.

wow, that's quite a day you had! Time to open the emergency stack of chocolate ;-)

What - surely you have one?

Blimey, who needs soap operas when we can come over here and get a shot of real life instead!
What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger my dear! x

Nicola - I think they like Spencer because he's fast and he's silver and he's slick. Says a lot about the male pysche, don't you think?

Brit in Bosnia - Well, I guess mums are bound to be the Fat Controller, really, aren't we? I'm hoping it's not a comment on the amount of weight I put on over Christmas....

Elisa - oh yes - still munching my way through the Christmas stash....see above!

Tara - soap opera? It's more like a horror film sometimes....or a comedy horror, because you've just got to laugh....
