Valentine's Day; the screenplay

3.30pm. NVG, opening the boys' enormous plastic bags full of Valentines gifts from school today.

Let's have a look at this.....whoah, don't just dump it all on the table, let's get it out carefully.

And this is from.....Tara? Lara? Oh, OK. Wow. Lovely. Homebaked cookies in a little bag all tied up with pink ribbons. Lara's mother obviously cares a great deal about Valentine's Day. (Mutters) Alternatively, she has FAR too much time on her hands......

And this is from Kate. Well, I'm glad to see they bought the same cheap crappy cards with a Dumdum lollipop as us!

Ah, that's interesting. Boy with very rich, influential parents....the tiniest, most rubbish looking cards in the bag. Glad I'm not the worst cheapskate in town.!

Blimey, this mother's printed out a special card with her child's face on it......

More pencils. Oh joy. Put them in the pencil box. And hologram stickers....no, you can't eat them. A little heart shaped notebook. That's quite cute, but don't start ripping pages out now......

And this one's made home made cards for every single child in the class. That IS actually quite impressive. I quite approve of that...although it must have been SO much work.

Oh, you want to take the candy off the cards? OK. Don't eat it all at once. That's right. Yes, I agree the cards are quite boring. But you might want to actually see who the candy is from. Let's put it in the bin later..

(Later)

The Doctor (coming home from work and seeing pink mess of candy and cards spread out on the table): Uuughh. What is all this appalling stuff? And why are the boys running around like sugared-up maniacs?

NVG (proffering bin): I told you so.

Valentine's Day. What happened to the romance?

You've just described the scene in our house exactly yesterday.

My 6th grade son came out of school and announced that they'd had a chocolate fountain with fresh strawberries to dip. A parent had brought it in.

Crazy!

that last comment was actually from me - and it said: OMG you are scaring me. I was just logged into the wrong blogger account

Fortunately our school celebrated V Day last Friday as we're off this week. Our flight was Friday evening so Little Guy got home from school and was whisked off to the airport before he could do anything with the bag full of crap. I just hope I can find it and hide/bin it when we get back.

I hope that you and the doctor got to sneak in a relaxing & restorative drink after the boys had gone to bed! (

Lorna -those Californians -always have to go one better!

HOM - Better forewarned...I had no idea about all of this last year.

Stacy - thank you.....

Expat Mum - it's amazing how quickly they do forget, really...

Tanya - I think we were having restorative drinks even before they went to bed....

Can't type. Must scrape jaw off floor. I bought B a card in horrid card shop in town at about 4pm on Sunday evening in panic and astonishment that they were open (Valentines cards half price incidentally...). He I think had remembered a little earlier but the girls were (and remain) totally oblivious to the whole thing. Can't believe it's part of the curriculum...

They give Valentines presents in class? I'd have been running around all sugared up if I'd been given that lot

That was our house. And I was the nasty Tiger Mother/Strict Schoolmarm who forced her 6 year old to make home-made individual cards for each child (secretly so I could get my hands on the GLUESTICKS AND HELP).
And romance? Husband bloody forgot and didn't get me anything. Pah.

My girls didn't get any. No romance here.

Is it really that bad? xx

Valentines day sounds like a very different event in the US.

plan b - sadly, it is. We even had written instructions from the teacher about it!

NB - see above...

MTFF - we actually made a pact not to get cards for each other this year, so fed up we have become with how commercial it is here....

A modern mother - I am sure that, had it not been compulsory, the boys would not have been interested!

Met Mum - yes!! This is not an exaggeration...

Helen - you're right. You give a card to absolutely everyone. Totally takes away the romance...
