Carnival time (with raccoon digression)

Quick wildlife update - I saw a raccoon in the garden last night! Now, I realise that this is probably the equivalent of seeing a fox in London (an almost daily occurrence in our Nappy Valley street) but I found it pretty damn exciting. A raccoon, to me, is a real wild animal. No matter that it had tried to nibble my rubbish bag, left outside the back door for about ten seconds en route to the wheelie bin. It had flashing black eyes, a pert little face and was fluffy-toy cute.

The Doctor was out (at a compulsory learner drivers' course - of which more later) and I had no-one to tell, except Littleboy 1, who was still up but didn't understand what a racccon was, until I showed him a picture of one online. I think he probably thought Mummy had gone nuts, babbling about wild animals and showing him pictures on the laptop. My only other option was to sit down and write an 'OhMyGod' style email to my sister - who probably also now thinks I have gone stark raving mad.

Anyway, I digress. Being a bona fide expat now, I have joined the hallowed ranks of the Expat Mums Blog, and am taking part in their blogging carnival today. Take a look here, and you'll find a whole host of fascinating posts, from parents spread far across the world, from Budapest to Laos. Enjoy.

A wild macaroon in the garden? I didn't hear you properly, it must the American accent slipping in

You'll be lucky if they only nibble at your rubbish though. They have a tendancy to tip the whole lot everywhere and sort through it. Grrr!
And, on a more serious note, do remember that rabies is alive and well in this country. Although dogs have to have rabies shots, there are no vets wandering around the countryside handing out free innoculations to cute little rabbits, squirrels and macaroons so be careful!

NB - Yeah, OK it's hard to spell (just realised I called it racccon half way through the post....)

Expat Mum - I'll bear your wise words in mind (don't worry, I won't be going out of my way to pet one any time soon).

Update - I've just seen it again, in the garden, climbing a tree. Who knew they climb trees?

OMG I think i have been in some kind of pregnancy bubble as I have only just found you again and been catching up on your big move.

All sounds really exciting! Hope you are loving it and not missing the UK too much.

Racoons are crafty devils. They can pry open just about anything. But, they're cute, which cannot be said for the possum.

It's so exciting to have you on our side of the blogging fence. Do you feel just a teency bit naughty, like you've joined an opposing team, or something?

How exciting about the raccoon.

BM - nice to hear from you again. I'm not really missing the UK at all yet, although I'm sure it'll kick in at some point. But I do miss my friends. If they could be transported over here, it would be pefect.

Janet - yes, our neighbours report that they had to buy new bins that lock fast so that the raccoons can't get into them....

Iota - I like being part of your team! It's like joining a new club. And re the comments on PM's blog, you're welcome!

Mud - yes, I think the reason they're so cute is that they do look like Disney cartoon characters.

Racoons look so cute, but they're very naughty! Skunks look cuddly too. Glad to hear you're going to heed Expat mum's warning though - a woman was bitten by a raccoon at our local park a couple of days ago. She wasn't trying to pet it - it ran up and bit her calf! Another woman was bitten the same week by a woodchuck that turned out to test positive for rabies - our local animal control officer said it was the first time he'd ever actually had a rabies test return positive :-(
